MECHANCAL PROPERTIES

1.Elasticity

*It is the property by virtue of which a material deformed under the load is enabled to return to its original dimension when the load is removed.

*Steel,Aluminium,Copper may be considered to be perfectly elastic within certain limit.

2.Plasticity

*The characteristics of the material by which it undergoes inelastic strain beyond those at the elastic limit is known as plasticity.

*This property is particularly useful in operation of pressing and forging.

3.Ductility

*It is the property which permits a material to be drawn out longitudinally to reduced section, under the action of tensile force.

*Ductile material must have low degree of elasticity.

*This is useful in wire drawing.

4.Brittleness

*It is the property by virtue of which a material breaks easily under action of shock loads

*It is lack of ductility

*EX: glass,ceramics

5.Malleability

*It is the property of material which permits the material to be extended in all direction without breaking.

*A malleable material posses a high degree of plasticity.

6.Toughness

*It is the property of material which enables it to absorb energy without fracture.

7.Hardness

*It is the ability of a material to resist indentation (or) Surface Abrasion.

*Brinell hardness test is used to check hardness.

8.Strength

*It is the property enables material to resist fracture under load

*This is the most important property from design point of view

9. Machinability

*It is the property of a material, which indicates the ease with which it can be out cur (or) removed in various machining operations such as turning, drilling, boring and shaping

10. Workability

*It is the property of a material which indicates the ease with which it can be formed into different shapes and sizes.

11. Stiffness

*It is the property of a material by virtue of which it resists deformation.

12. Creep

*It is the property of a material by virtue of which it deforms continously under as steady load

13. Fatigue

*It is the property of a material by virtue of which it deforms under the fluctuating (or) repeated loads.
